Unsung Canadian Heroes: Police Officers

When young children bear witness to tragedy, we always tell them to look for the helpers. We want them to seek out the people who step forward, help out, and model acts of compassionate behavior. We want them to focus on those professionals whose job it is to maintain order, restore health, and sometimes perform rescue operations.

These people are unsung heroes. They’re all around us. Sometimes we see them, sometimes we don’t. Some heroes wear a uniform, like police officers, fire fighters, or ambulance workers. Some don’t, like mothers, teachers, and passersby who offer food to the homeless.

In this series, each post will focus on a different type of unsung Canadian hero. Today we’re looking at police officers. Given the nature of the work they do, a lot of these films call for viewer discretion.

Whistling Smith

Sergeant Bernie “Whistling” Smith, who passed away in 2012, was widely known as a tough cop with a big heart. He goes beyond the call of duty by not only maintaining order on Vancouver’s Eastside, but by actively trying to help the addicts, thieves, and prostitutes living in the area.

No matter the subject, filmmaker Terence Macartney-Filgate is a master at getting through the veneer to give us a glimpse of the truth. This time, he turns his lens on the Toronto metropolitan police force to show us what they’re dealing with day in and day out.

Through a Blue Lens

Here are a group of seven policemen who take their jobs one step further by documenting the people on their beat to send a powerful message about drug abuse. By getting them to open up and speak on camera about their experiences, these officers are working to prevent addiction in the next generation.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams

Take a trip to Chauvet Cave in southern France. A UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason, this cave is home to some of the earliest known cave paintings on Earth. The Masters Series: Alanis Obomsawin

When you have a filmmaker with 50 films that span a 50-year career with the National Film Board, it’s hard to narrow the choices down to just 5.

There is no arguing that Alanis Obomsawin is a master. She is a genius at what she does, and she keeps telling the stories that need to be told. She’s a leader, a storyteller, and a champion for Indigenous people and their rights. She brings important issues to light, in a way that’s engaging for audiences and makes us sit up and take notice.

Making Movie History: Alanis Obomsawin

Before we start, we should really get to know the filmmaker a little. This brief clip features Alanis herself talking about her career, from her early days onwards. It offers great insight into who she is, and what drives her.

Christmas at Moose Factory

When Alanis decided she was ready to make her own film, this is the one she made. It’s a short animation, crafted from the drawings made by the children in the Moose Factory settlement. The drawings illustrate the stories told by the children. It’s a poignant film, and though only 13 minutes in length, it offers great insight into the filmmaker Obomsawin would become.

Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance

How could we not include this film? It is the seminal film on the historic confrontation between the Mohawks, the Quebec police, and the Canadian army in the summer of 1990. Alanis Obomsawin proves herself fearless as she thrusts us to the forefront of the action by spending 78 days and night filming the armed stand-off. The film is a masterpiece.

Professor Norman Cornett: Since when do we divorce the right answer from an honest answer?

Okay, once you get past the title, there’s a powerful film here about a McGill professor who was infamously dismissed form his job in 2007. Norman Cornett was an unconventional teacher, but his methods were adored by scores of students. In this film, Obomsawin strays from her usual fare to pay tribute to this man who affected the lives of many.

Is the Crown at War with Us?

This film asks the painful question on everyone’s lips as the Mi’kmaq fishermen of Burnt Church, New Brunswick, watched federal fishery officers wage war on their livelihood in the summer of 2000. What was going on? Once again, Obomsawin puts her skills to work as she walks us through the roots of the conflict and provides context for the issues at hand. Seemingly with ease, this woman renders even the most complex issues clear enough that even I understand, and she does it with grace.

Satisfy Your Grace and Frankie Withdrawal Here

I know I’m late to the party, but I just finished binge-watching Grace and Frankie. Holy cow. What a great show. But now that it’s over, I’m just craving some sassy senior-lady talk. There’s something highly enjoyable about watching elderly women with plenty of life experience, and past the age of giving a… hoot, let loose and let you know what they think. Thankfully, we’ve got some great examples of this in our collection.

The Company of Strangers

This film is a favourite among NFB fans. It always does well when we feature it, and generates warm, heartfelt comments. Meet 8 elderly women who find themselves in a bad spot after their bus breaks down in the wild. Filmed before the advent of reality TV, it’s an unscripted film with non-professional actors, allowing it to blur the lines between reality and fiction. It’s a great film, and if you haven’t seen it, take the time to watch it now.

A Sunday at 105

I know this film has been featured a few times recently, but come on, it’s so good. I couldn’t leave it out. No matter what kind of mood I’m in, this woman never fails to evoke a laugh from me. She shoots from the hip, especially when it comes to the juicy topics. She could give Frankie a run for her money, for sure!

Mabel

Talk about a feisty senior with spunk! This short doc introduces audiences to Mabel, a 90-year-old woman who runs her own business, having opened her hair salon 70 years ago! 70 YEARS AGO! And she’s still doing the same old shampoos and sets, and she’s still got her old customers… at least the ones that haven’t died on her. This woman is something else; a pure joy to behold.

Louise

Oh, Louise. First of all, you’ve got to love a woman whose first item on her daily to-do list is “go to the bathroom.” But seriously, what this woman accomplishes before I even wake up in the morning is astounding. Louise is a 96-year-old woman living in rural Manitoba, and this loving tribute from granddaughter Anita Lebeau is a real gem.

Augusta

Meet Augusta, an 88-year-old non-status member of the Shuswap tribe from British Columbia. She lives alone in a log cabin; no water, no electricity. But no matter what life throws at her, she manages to live in the moment. With a heart of gold, she spreads good feelings wherever she goes.

You can stay in a hostel and share a room with 9 other travelers. You can stay for a while, in a “co-living” space with shared duties. You can stay in a tropical location, even if the purpose of your trip is to work while living abroad. Selina is creating a network of destinations for the modern traveler, designed to encompass all of these options. Like a hostel, the focus is on the community aspect. By staying with Selina, you’re joining a community of likeminded travelers.

Work While Abroad

Selina has locations throughout much of Latin America—in Panama, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, and more. In total there are 23 locations in 8 countries, with 8 additional destinations on the way. They’re expanding rapidly because the concept works. It strikes a nice balance between young backpackers on a budget, digital nomads, and social travelers.
