Unsung Canadian Heroes: Police Officers

When young children bear witness to tragedy, we always tell them to look for the helpers. We want them to seek out the people who step forward, help out, and model acts of compassionate behavior. We want them to focus on those professionals whose job it is to maintain order, restore health, and sometimes perform rescue operations.

These people are unsung heroes. They’re all around us. Sometimes we see them, sometimes we don’t. Some heroes wear a uniform, like police officers, fire fighters, or ambulance workers. Some don’t, like mothers, teachers, and passersby who offer food to the homeless.

In this series, each post will focus on a different type of unsung Canadian hero. Today we’re looking at police officers. Given the nature of the work they do, a lot of these films call for viewer discretion.

Whistling Smith

Sergeant Bernie “Whistling” Smith, who passed away in 2012, was widely known as a tough cop with a big heart. He goes beyond the call of duty by not only maintaining order on Vancouver’s Eastside, but by actively trying to help the addicts, thieves, and prostitutes living in the area.

Police

No matter the subject, filmmaker Terence Macartney-Filgate is a master at getting through the veneer to give us a glimpse of the truth. This time, he turns his lens on the Toronto metropolitan police force to show us what they’re dealing with day in and day out.

Through a Blue Lens

Here are a group of seven policemen who take their jobs one step further by documenting the people on their beat to send a powerful message about drug abuse. By getting them to open up and speak on camera about their experiences, these officers are working to prevent addiction in the next generation.

10-7 for Life

Meet Carol Banks, a Toronto officer who’s on the last two weeks of the job. Burnt out and at the end of her rope, Banks has opted to get off the force to salvage her peace of mind. Filmed by her sister, the film really gives you a sense of what these officers are up against.

Station 10

As we move from the streets of Toronto to the neighbourhoods of Montreal, we learn that regardless of location, police officers have their work cut out for them. This feature-length doc follows the life of police officers working at Montreal’s Station 10 in the early 1970s.

CreativeMornings: Find Creative Jobs

CreativeMornings is a job site dedicated to creative jobs.

You can search for creative jobs on the site, either near your current location or as remote work. The company also holds monthly events around the globe for creative professionals. With upcoming events in Stockholm, Dubai, and Singapore, it’s clear that CreativeMornings has the intention to become the leading worldwide brand for creative job seekers. New Movies Coming Out: Never Miss A New Movie Again

New Movies Coming Out helps you keep track of upcoming theatrical releases.

See What’s Coming Out Next

At first glance, it seems as if this concept has been tried before. There are plenty of movie review websites that also let you browse upcoming releases. There are sites where you can watch trailers. If you really want to know what movies are coming out soon, you could just Google it. But New Movies Coming Out has such a specific purpose, it fills a void that’s otherwise existed on the internet for years. Rather than bogging down the site with reviews or other distracting information, New Movies Coming Out simply does what its title describes: tells you what new movies are coming out.

A Handy Newsletter

New Movies Coming Out also has a useful newsletter, which sends you a weekly roundup of the upcoming releases. This is one of the easiest and most carefree ways to track the movies that are coming out. As on other sites, you can also watch trailers and get the basic info about the upcoming movies. You can also filter by genre, or search for a particular movie that you’re interested in. Each movie on the site displays the poster along with the date it’s scheduled to be released. You can even save movies that you want to see by favoriting them. Especially if you already subscribe to Moviepass, New Movies Coming Out can help you plan what you want to see.

No Time Machine Required

Hold on to your DeLorean as we begin a journey through time. From a primal sea brimming with life, to a dinosaur-filled landscape where the first fledgling fliers took to the sky, to a prehistoric frozen desert where a trunked, furry mass moves silently through a blizzard, to an ancient cave in France where our earliest ancestors painted the world they saw.

So watch these four adventures, fossilized on film for your viewing pleasure, on this ancient list of prehistoric movies. No time machine necessary.

How Dinosaurs Learned to Fly

In biological terms, ‘Dinosaur’ is a clade of animals that includes everything from Tyrannosaurus Rex to Stegosaurus to…sparrows? Yes, it’s a weird fact of life that birds – from emus to cockatoos – are actually part of a sub-grouping of Dinosaurs called theropods. This fun, animated short for kids (and adults!) re-imagines how the earliest dinosaurs learned to take flight – with hilarious results.

Canada Vignettes: Woolly Mammoth

This short film is an animated showcase of an ancient animal that once marched upon the frozen tundras of Canada nearly 10,000 years ago: the Wooly Mammoth. Overall, this is an informative, bite-sized vignette about one of the coolest megafauna to have ever existed. Also, there’s an adorable little baby mammoth in it.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2IZ4CRO

Evolution

Our next film on this list is this quirky animation which, as its name indicates, is all about the theory of evolution. With a catchy theme and an endearing art style, watch as the cycle of evolution, from the most primitive single-celled organisms, to wading amphibians, to fuzzy mammals, is unraveled before your very eyes.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2HFbS6c

Cave of Forgotten Dreams

Take a trip to Chauvet Cave in southern France. A UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason, this cave is home to some of the earliest known cave paintings on Earth. Naturally, a place where the first artistic forays of humankind are preserved is going to be protected by a lot of red tape. But, in Cave of Forgotten Dreams, filmmaker Werner Herzog is given unprecedented access to the interior of the cave. Featuring gorgeous environmental cinematography, witty commentary, and insightful analysis, keep your eyes peeled as a Palaeolithic portrait 32,000 years in the making comes alive on camera.

The Masters Series: Alanis Obomsawin

When you have a filmmaker with 50 films that span a 50-year career with the National Film Board, it’s hard to narrow the choices down to just 5.

There is no arguing that Alanis Obomsawin is a master. She is a genius at what she does, and she keeps telling the stories that need to be told. She’s a leader, a storyteller, and a champion for Indigenous people and their rights. She brings important issues to light, in a way that’s engaging for audiences and makes us sit up and take notice.

For this post, I’ve done my best to include the films that I feel represent a huge body of work. If you disagree, or have different choices, please feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Making Movie History: Alanis Obomsawin

Before we start, we should really get to know the filmmaker a little. This brief clip features Alanis herself talking about her career, from her early days onwards. It offers great insight into who she is, and what drives her.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2qyVCvp

Christmas at Moose Factory

When Alanis decided she was ready to make her own film, this is the one she made. It’s a short animation, crafted from the drawings made by the children in the Moose Factory settlement. The drawings illustrate the stories told by the children. It’s a poignant film, and though only 13 minutes in length, it offers great insight into the filmmaker Obomsawin would become.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2GVp9KC

Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance

How could we not include this film? It is the seminal film on the historic confrontation between the Mohawks, the Quebec police, and the Canadian army in the summer of 1990. Alanis Obomsawin proves herself fearless as she thrusts us to the forefront of the action by spending 78 days and night filming the armed stand-off. The film is a masterpiece.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/1JBfUdj

Professor Norman Cornett: Since when do we divorce the right answer from an honest answer?

Okay, once you get past the title, there’s a powerful film here about a McGill professor who was infamously dismissed form his job in 2007. Norman Cornett was an unconventional teacher, but his methods were adored by scores of students. In this film, Obomsawin strays from her usual fare to pay tribute to this man who affected the lives of many.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/LhgGcx

Is the Crown at War with Us?

This film asks the painful question on everyone’s lips as the Mi’kmaq fishermen of Burnt Church, New Brunswick, watched federal fishery officers wage war on their livelihood in the summer of 2000. What was going on? Once again, Obomsawin puts her skills to work as she walks us through the roots of the conflict and provides context for the issues at hand. Seemingly with ease, this woman renders even the most complex issues clear enough that even I understand, and she does it with grace.

Satisfy Your Grace and Frankie Withdrawal Here

I know I’m late to the party, but I just finished binge-watching Grace and Frankie. Holy cow. What a great show. But now that it’s over, I’m just craving some sassy senior-lady talk. There’s something highly enjoyable about watching elderly women with plenty of life experience, and past the age of giving a… hoot, let loose and let you know what they think. Thankfully, we’ve got some great examples of this in our collection.

The Company of Strangers

This film is a favourite among NFB fans. It always does well when we feature it, and generates warm, heartfelt comments. Meet 8 elderly women who find themselves in a bad spot after their bus breaks down in the wild. Filmed before the advent of reality TV, it’s an unscripted film with non-professional actors, allowing it to blur the lines between reality and fiction. It’s a great film, and if you haven’t seen it, take the time to watch it now.

A Sunday at 105

I know this film has been featured a few times recently, but come on, it’s so good. I couldn’t leave it out. No matter what kind of mood I’m in, this woman never fails to evoke a laugh from me. She shoots from the hip, especially when it comes to the juicy topics. She could give Frankie a run for her money, for sure!

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2Hap0C8

Mabel

Talk about a feisty senior with spunk! This short doc introduces audiences to Mabel, a 90-year-old woman who runs her own business, having opened her hair salon 70 years ago! 70 YEARS AGO! And she’s still doing the same old shampoos and sets, and she’s still got her old customers… at least the ones that haven’t died on her. This woman is something else; a pure joy to behold.

oehttps://www.nfb.ca/film/mabel/

Louise

Oh, Louise. First of all, you’ve got to love a woman whose first item on her daily to-do list is “go to the bathroom.” But seriously, what this woman accomplishes before I even wake up in the morning is astounding. Louise is a 96-year-old woman living in rural Manitoba, and this loving tribute from granddaughter Anita Lebeau is a real gem.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2IGYyxg

Augusta

Meet Augusta, an 88-year-old non-status member of the Shuswap tribe from British Columbia. She lives alone in a log cabin; no water, no electricity. But no matter what life throws at her, she manages to live in the moment. With a heart of gold, she spreads good feelings wherever she goes.

Selina: A Whole New Way To Stay

Selina is creating a new network of hotels / hostels / co-living spaces.

Travel Socially

Especially when traveling in Central and South America, there are many different options for places to stay. You can stay in a nice hotel with luxury amenities. You can stay in a hostel and share a room with 9 other travelers. You can stay for a while, in a “co-living” space with shared duties. You can stay in a tropical location, even if the purpose of your trip is to work while living abroad. Selina is creating a network of destinations for the modern traveler, designed to encompass all of these options. Like a hostel, the focus is on the community aspect. By staying with Selina, you’re joining a community of likeminded travelers.

Work While Abroad

Selina has locations throughout much of Latin America—in Panama, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, and more. In total there are 23 locations in 8 countries, with 8 additional destinations on the way. They’re expanding rapidly because the concept works. It strikes a nice balance between young backpackers on a budget, digital nomads, and social travelers. Most of the Selina sites also have co-working plans, so you can transform your vacation destination into an office if you really need to do so. There are relatively cheap packages, and you can stay for just a day or as long as a month. Selina is rethinking the concept of traveling for the modern traveler, and it’s worth considering if you’re traveling to any of the destinations where a Selina site currently exists.

BringFido: Pet Friendly Travel Directory

BringFido helps you find hotels and other places where you can bring your dog.

Bring Your Dog Along

Many cities around the world are becoming increasingly dog-friendly. Still, for pet owners, it can be difficult to find hotels and tourist destinations that allow them to bring their four-legged friends along for the journey. BringFido offers guidance for these types of travelers, with a directory offering all of the hotels and accommodations that allow pets. It’s much easier to browse BringFido than it is to call hotel after hotel, disappointed that they won’t allow you to bring your furry best friend. But BringFido doesn’t stop with just hotels, it also lets you search restaurants, activities, events, services, destinations, and much more.

Hotels, Restaurants, & More!

BringFido has a simple search engine-oriented interface. You start by typing in the location where you’ll be wanting to bring your dog, and selecting from the list of aforementioned options. BringFido then returns a list of results, along with user-generated reviews, pictures, and other information. The site even has a 24/7 support line, so you can contact their customer service team for help with your bookings. The best part of BringFido, however, is the Pet Fee Guarantee. The site is so confident in its information that it guarantees whatever price is displayed will be the final cost of bringing your dog. This is huge for pet owners, who are well accustomed to hidden fees. For dog owners who want to make the most of their lives with their pup, BringFido is a great, helpful option.

Make No Myths-takes

Ubiquitous across all cultures, mythological tales are an integral part of the human experience. They’re how our earliest ancestors attempted to explain the world they lived in. Sometimes they’re cautionary, sometimes they’re heartwarming, and sometimes they try to say something important about the human condition. Whatever their purpose, they’re almost always entertaining.

So, keeping in this myth-y mood, we’ve gathered five films that spin mythological tales from around the globe.

Icarus

Let’s start this list off with the story of Icarus: the classic tale of someone who can’t follow simple instructions. In this short animation, created by filmmaker Paul Bochner, the viewer is given an artful, visual ride as this iconic myth is reconstructed before their very eyes.

oehttps://www.nfb.ca/film/icarus/

The Magic of Anansi

Originating from tales first told by the Akan people of what is now present-day Ghana, the spider-shaped trickster God Anansi is a popular figure in contemporary media, appearing in everything from video games, to comic books, to Neil Gaiman’s American Gods (as well as its excellent spin-off novel, Anansi Boys). This fun, animated short for children (and adults), depicts an adventure in the life of Anansi who, after realizing the negative consequences of one of his plots and schemes, learns a valuable lesson.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2uXnWN8

The Legend of the Flying Canoe

This short film is an animated take on the Chasse-galerie, a synchronistic myth born from a mixture of both French European and First Nation legends. This film treads all the way back to the 1800s to retell the origin of the myth, as a group of desperate loggers are trapped in a desolate frozen region and must make a deal with the devil himself if they ever want to get home…

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2HkHOMW

Syrinx

This animated short, the first made by Oscar nominated director Ryan Larkin, tells the story of Syrinx, the nymph who, after rejecting the god Pan, was cursed and transformed into a hollow reed (as one does). Along with gorgeous charcoal drawn animation, watch as this story comes to life with music by Claude Debussy.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2uYYtmK

Summer Legend

Let’s finish off our mythological list with this colourfully illustrated and beautifully animated short film. Here, we experience a famous Mi’kmaq tale featuring the great spirit, Glooscap. In this delightful story, we see Glooscap in his legendary battle with the icy Winter to bring summer to the people of the North.

DIY Movies for Master Artisans

As a person who can’t even build a sandwich, I’ve always admired those who can create wonderful works of craftsmanship with nothing but their hands. After all, what people build are often more than just crafts – they’re a reflection of the person who made it, a manifestation of the culture they grew up in.

So, building upon this artisanal theme, we’ve lovingly constructed this list of four films featuring expert craftspeople and artisans who, in a Hiram Abiff-like fashion, are masters of what they create.

Steady as She Goes

George Fulfit possesses an infectious passion for building model ships. A quirky enthusiasm that is on full display in this short, character documentary. Watch George as he attempts to construct, from start to finish, his largest ever miniature ship-in-a-bottle. The perfect film for anyone who ever wanted to know how you would go about inserting a tiny ship into an equally tiny bottle.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2IoeynB

Kamik

Kamik paints an intimate, somber and gripping portrait of Ulayok Kaviok. Kaviok has a special talent for tailoring and creating a traditional, Inuit garment called a Kamik. It is through her skills in weaving these sealskinned boots that the relationship she and her family face between tradition and cultural transformation is revealed to the viewer.

oehttps://www.nfb.ca/film/kamik/

In Praise of Hands

From the frigid tundras of Canada, to the warm air Mexico, to the island of Japan, to the deltas of Nigeria and everywhere in-between, this documentary is a fun, informative tribute to the craftsperson. Keep your eyes peeled as the dextrous and precision skills of artisans from around the globe are put on full display; from pottery making, to stone work, to weaving, to dyeing, to puppet making and beyond.

oehttps://https://ift.tt/2GMyl30

How to Build an Igloo

Have you ever wondered how to build an igloo? Well, have we sure got the film for you. In this short,  iconic, and highly entertaining documentary, we are given a personal view to an igloo building event. So, watch as two people pick a spot, and, with nothing but frozen snow, a steel knife, and their own cultural ingenuity, build an entire igloo from scratch.
